Caversham Heights Photographs - Snow in December 2009 On 21 December 2009 snow fell...and fell...and fell. St Peter’s Hill was completely closed, and Reading-bound traffic was stuck for hours. As night fell it became obvious that motorists were in distress, so the church was opened as an impromptu refuge for stranded travellers and their need for hot drinks, toilets and food. Folk from the neighbourhood came in with supplies of food, milk, coffee, tea etc. Not least among the remarkable happenings of the day (and night) was the way in which HGV drivers expressed their appreciation of the warm welcome they were given. In time-honoured fashion they organised a whip-round for whatever good cause the church cared to support. Here are some photos to remind us of that alarming occasion.
