On 21 December 2009 snow fell...and fell...and fell. St Peter’s Hill was completely
closed, and Reading-bound traffic was stuck for hours. As night fell it became
obvious that motorists were in distress, so the church was opened as an
impromptu refuge for stranded travellers and their need for hot drinks, toilets and
food. Folk from the neighbourhood came in with supplies of food, milk, coffee, tea
etc.
Not least among the remarkable happenings of the day (and night) was the way in
which HGV drivers expressed their appreciation of the warm welcome they were
given. In time-honoured fashion they organised a whip-round for whatever good
cause the church cared to support.
